E4A mission:

Evidence for Action (E4A) is a five year programme which aims to improve maternal and newborn survival in six sub-Saharan countries. Funded by the UK Department for International Development, it focuses on using better information and improved advocacy and accountability to save lives in Ethiopia, Ghana, Malawi, Nigeria, Sierra Leone and Tanzania.

When the E4A programme finishes, we want to leave behind strong, persistent, local voices as well as clinics and services which save many more lives than when we started. Capacity building is therefore an important product of the programme and is particularly focused on our host agencies and country teams.

This literature review aimed to provide support to the use of evidence, advocacy and accountability activities to effect change. The results of this systematic search included studies effectively employing these tactics in both health and non-health sectors. Studies were analysed to understand strategies or tactics employed and the impact of what was achieved.

The results of literature review focused on the lessons of successful advocacy campaigns or frameworks. Several overarching themes were evident, including the importance of networks, champions, local and appropriate evidence and strong communication.
